How often do you feel that you need a simple getaway to recharge your batteries and just relax? Well last weekend my husband and I needed just that - a little refreshing vacation. We wanted to drive somewhere and take Annemarie so we decided to go to St. Augustine. I had never been and my husband hadn't been since his fourth grade field trip in elementary.
Hotel
Our favorite app is Hotel Tonight so we left Thursday and quickly opened the app to see what hotels had great deal in St. Augustine. My biggest requirement is cleanliness. Between my allergies and my disgust for dirty things I know I won't be happy in a dirty hotel. We decided on the TRYP Hotel by Wyndham because of its price point and its great reviews. We were super happy with our little suite and the fact that it was in close proximity to everything. We really didn't want to be close to any bars or restaurants because of the noise - wanted to make sure the LO slept well.
Restaurants
1. For breakfast you HAVE to eat at
Maple Street Biscuit Company.
The coffee was delicious and their biscuitswere to die for - even Annemarie gave them the seal of approval.
We tried The Five and Dime and the Maple Coffee Latte. We heard from regular customers that their grits and yogurt is a great pick too!
2. For a little pick me up we had coffee at Relampago Coffee Lab. I had the
White Chocolate Hazelnut Latte and it had me wanting more. We were able to sit outside and just relax and rest our feet from walking around and visiting the little shops. The customer service was great and they were willing to help and guide us in picking a coffee we would truly enjoy.
3. For dinner we wanted to go somewhere with live music and a pretty ambiance. We decided to go to Harry's Seafood Bar and Grille and like their slogan says - we were hooked. This New Orleans style restaurant was beyond delicious. To start we had their yummy bread and I had their She Crab Soup which was sweet with the right kind of spice. For the main dish we had Shrimp and Grits and Crawl Fish Etouffee. Unfortunately we didn't have dessert because we wanted some hot chocolate at a local chocolate shop but next time I think we will be trying some tasty treats.
Things to Do
Castillo De San Marcos: The oldest masonry fort in the continental United States, the Castillo de San Marcos is a large Spanish stone fortress built to protect and defend Spain's claims in the New World. It's a National Monument and, at over 315 years old, it's the oldest structure in St. Augustine. I do recommend not taking a stroller to this part since there are many stairs. We visited the first school house, which I especially enjoyed since I am a teacher. The variety of little shopsand the beauty of the historical town are great to just walk aroundand enjoy. Everyone was extremely sweet and accommodating since we had Annemarie. We also enjoyed visiting the Pirate Museum!
Of course we got a kick when we saw our last name on one of the little shops- Casa Rodriguez.
